Diabetic Checks

diabetesAlison Spencer-Smith is a specialist diabetic nurse. All Diabetic patients should attend the surgery annually for a full diabetic check (even if they are being see in secondary care also). Diabetic checks last 30 minutes.


Asthma / COPD Checks

inhalerAlison Spencer-Smith is trained in the management of Asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease). All asthma and COPD patients should attend the surgery annually for a full check.


Over 45’s check

All patients aged 45 and over should attend the surgery annually for routine Blood pressure, Blood and Urine tests. If you are over 45 and wish to book an appointment please call the reception team.


4YP For Young People.

Helios Medical Centre are part of the 4YP program which is aimed at giving easy access to a doctor or nurse for patients under 19 who wish to discuss any matters in confidence with a clinician. If you are a young person wishing to see a doctor or nurse about anything from sexual health to bullying and everything in between please call the reception team and quote “4YP” any information you give will be in strict confidence.


Flu Clinics

Acoldnnually, during October we run a programme to vaccinate patients against influenza. All patients over 65 or in the 'at risk' categories are eligible for immunisation. The categories are

  • Respiratory Disease including Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Renal Failure.

If you are over 65 you will also be eligible for a Pneumovax Immunisation (if you have not had this previously and they last 10 years). Please mention this to the receptionists when you telephone us to make your appointment. We are also offering Swine Flu vaccinations to the at risk groups.


 Minor Surgery

We hold a minor surgery clinic every 8 weeks for a variety of conditions.Your doctor will discuss the options available with you. Appointments are required for every procedure.


Smoking Cessation

Everyone knows that smoking is one of the most destructive things you can do to your health. It is never too late or too early to give up smoking. We are always ready to give help and advice within the practice about stopping smoking. The Smoking Cessation Clinic provides specialist advice and support to those wishing to stop smoking. Please call the surgery to book an appointment with Jackie Plant.


 Weight management

Judy Smith our treatment room nurse has been trained in weight management and offers appointments to help patients lose weight.


Health Visitor/District Nurse/Midwife

Health Visitor

The Health Visitor who is linked closely to the practice is a qualified nurse with special training in child health, health promotion and health education. She is based at the surgery and works with families and all age groups, offering home visits and group work i.e. parent and baby support group, baby massage, positive parenting groups and smoking cessation advice for all. District Nurses

These nurses work closely with the doctor to provide nursing care at home when it is needed. Messages can be passed on to them via the practice receptionist, or they can be contacted at the Shirehampton Health Centre. Tel. No.: 0117 916 2200

Midwife

The midwife attached to the practice is Mrs. Marion Howard. The antenatal clinic is held every other Monday afternoon. Marion provides antenatal care, postnatal care, carries out home births and deliveries in hospital.
